Road Safety Tips for Thanksgiving

For those traveling by car, the same rules apply in terms of packing light and traveling at off-peak times. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), heavy traffic over Thanksgiving weekend results in an increased risk of being involved in serious and potentially deadly car accidents.

Make the safety of you and your loved ones a priority by following these Thanksgiving road safety tips from the NHTSA:

  • Have your vehicle serviced by a mechanic before your trip
  • Make sure everyone buckles their seat belts and use approved safety seats for young children
  • Avoid distractions while driving, such as texting, using a cell phone, or looking at maps or GPS
  • Know the route you plan to take, and avoid areas under construction
  • Be careful when driving around trucks and allow them plenty of room for maneuvering
  • Follow the rules of the road and avoid speeding, tailgating, and improper passes. Obey all traffic signs and signals
  • Over the holiday weekend, there will be plenty of celebrating. Do not get behind the wheel if you have been drinking, and avoid taking any prescription medicine that could impair your judgment or your ability to effectively operate a vehicle.
