Henry Avocado Corporation Issues Recall Due to Listeria Contamination

On March 23, 2019, the Henry Avocado Corporation issued a press release announcing a voluntary recall of its California-grown whole avocados. The family-owned company came to this decision after environmental samples taken during a recent government inspection tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. This species of pathogenic bacteria can cause fatal infections (listeriosis) in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. It’s also been known to cause stillbirths and miscarriages among pregnant women.

The recalled products have already been distributed to six states, including New Hampshire. The Henry Avocado Corporation is warning customers in these states to avoid purchasing any avocados that are labeled with a “Bravocado” sticker. At present, there haven’t been any reported illnesses or fatalities associated with this recall. Even so, it’s critical that state residents recognize the symptoms of listeriosis and, if necessary, seek immediate medical attention. Patients have been known to experience fever, muscle aches, convulsions, confusion, gastrointestinal symptoms, and loss of balance. Fortunately, most cases of listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics.
