The president of the United States announced there will be an increase in efforts to stop impaired driving during December 2015, National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. He claims that every year, 10,000 people die in drunk driving accidents. Additional people suffer fatal injuries in distracted driving and drugged driving accidents. President Obama believes that collectively, we can improve public safety and ensure all people can live happy, healthy, and full lives.
President Barack Obama states every person can take part in improving the safety of the roads by completing the following tasks:
- Speaking up and spreading the word
- Warning others of the consequences of driving under impaired conditions
- Taking keys from potential drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Reminding others to remain focused on the road and not other matters
- Wearing seatbelts at all times regardless of how long the drive may be
In efforts to prevent impaired driving, local and state law enforcement agencies are doing everything in their power to prevent impaired driving as well as respond to these incidents quickly. Additionally, The President announced federal action took place when they released an updated version of the National Drug Control Strategy. This act encourages States to form drugged driving laws and create methods that can help officers identify impaired drivers.
