• Fourth degree: The most severe burn, these life-threatening burns destroy every layer of the skin and may damage some muscles, tendons and even bones.

There are other degrees of burn injuries beyond the fourth degree, but these burns are so severe that they are not considered survivable.

Severe burn injuries can even result from exposure to freezing temperatures, such as in the case of cold burns, or “frostbite.”
