What is Ozempic?
Ozempic is the Novo Nordisk brand name of semaglutide, a GLP-1 drug designed to help mitigate the symptoms of type 2 diabetes. The drug is typically administered through weekly injections. Due to weight loss being a common side effect of Ozempic use, it has unofficially become one of the country’s most popular weight loss drugs. Wegovy, another injectable semaglutide drug, was also approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2021 for weight loss.
Why is Ozempic Dangerous?
When used as directed, Ozempic might still be unsafe due to the potential for serious side effects that were not properly disclosed to patients and the medical community when the drug was first released. Once the news first revealed Ozempic’s possible link to gastrointestinal tract complications, researchers re-examined the drug and have since released additional reports that warn of other possible side effects.
Serious Ozempic side effects include the following and more:
- Intraoperative pulmonary aspiration
- Ileus or bowel obstruction
- Esophageal injury requiring surgery
- Gallbladder removal/GI injury requiring surgery
- Note that some labels were updated in 2022 to cover this injury, so may have to decline based on when the PC began using the GLP-1.
- Gastroparesis
- DVT (Deep vein thrombosis) or PE (pulmonary embolism)
- Wernicke’s Encephalopathy (brain disorder)
- Vitamin deficiencies/malnutrition-related disorders such as Sarcopenia
- Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION – eye injury)
- Suicide/suicide attempts
- Cyclical vomiting for at least 4 weeks (required medical treatment/hospitalization)
- Acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE)
- NAION (specific eye injury)
Many of the side effects are severe or life-threatening and may not clear once Ozempic use stops. For example, gastroparesis, one of the most common undisclosed side effects of Ozempic, can cause severe intestinal blockages that may be fatal if untreated.
