Evidence of Zantac Contamination
In 2019, an online pharmacy testing Zantac detected levels of dimethylformamide (DMF) in blood pressure. DMF can create nitrosamine impurities like N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), which the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classify as a likely carcinogen because it can modify DNA. Studies have also shown that NDMA increases the risk of cancer in animal experiments.
Both the WHO and IARC have been recommending recalls for drugs that are found to contain unacceptable levels of these contaminants since 2018.
In 2019, the FDA published a safety communication warning that some ranitidine medicines, including Zantac, had tested positive for NDMA. Not long after the FDA issued the warning, Sandoz recalled 14 lots of its generic version of ranitidine hydrochloride capsules upon confirmation that the NDMA contamination levels exceed safety the FDA’s established permissible daily intake of 96 ng. Although generic drug manufacturers like Glaxo-Smith-Kline and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories halted shipments of their ranitidine products, they didn’t implement any recalls.
