Head-on Collision in Hancock County Results in Death

A crash that occurred in Gouldsboro on June 19th has left one person dead. The head-on collision happened on Route 1 near the Hancock County and Washington County line. It was first reported around 10 p.m., according to authorities.

The caller who reported the accident said it involved two vehicles hitting each other head-on and catching on fire. While one driver died in the crash, the other driver, Timothy Smith, and his passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and had to be pulled out of the vehicle. The crash is still being investigated by local authorities.

Unfortunately, these types of tragic accidents are far too common, and our sympathies go out to the family of the deceased. The only information we have available right now is what is contained in the news reports.

Based only on the reports, it appears that one of the drivers crossed the center line and collided head-on with the other vehicle. On its face, it appears that the accident was caused by the individual who crossed the center line and tragically lost his life and injured two innocent people. However, initial reports are not always complete or accurate, and an independent investigation is warranted.

The Importance of Properly Investigating Auto Accidents

Local police departments and county sheriff’s departments do not always have the time or the resources to fully investigate a fatal accident like this one. Tracking down independent witnesses, doing a forensic analysis of the vehicles involved, and determining what caused the vehicle to cross the center line in the first place can be an arduous task.

While we don’t have any specific details other than the news report, the following factors should be considered in a crash like this:

  • Was there a malfunction or defect with the vehicle that caused it to swerve out of its lane?
  • Where were the involved individuals prior to the crash? What were they doing?
  • Are there any independent witnesses?

Perhaps the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a careful and complete investigation of all the circumstances surrounding this tragic accident. But for anyone involved in a life-changing accident, our firm always encourages them to have an independent professional investigation completed. Hopefully the independent investigation will confirm the official reports are accurate, but the peace of mind of knowing is sometimes the most important thing in the end.
