Fighting for the Rights of Clients Injured by Dangerous Drugs
Injectafer is an intravenous iron supplement that doctors sometimes prescribe to people with iron deficiency anemia and people diagnosed with kidney disease but who are not on dialysis. Although Injectafer was approved and released into the U.S. consumer market in 2013, research has revealed that people who use it are at high risk of developing hypophosphatemia, which can result in serious health complications. Since the makers of Injectafer failed to provide adequate warning of the serious side effects to patients, lawsuits are now being filed against the drug manufacturer for negligence.
What Is Hypophosphatemia?
Hypophosphatemia is a disorder caused by abnormally low levels of phosphate in the blood. Phosphate is a type of electrolyte that is crucial for energy production, nerve function, and healthy bones. Hypophosphatemia is measured by serum levels of phosphate concentration and can be diagnosed as mild, moderate, severe, or extreme.
According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, patients who were given Injectafer had significantly higher cases of hypophosphatemia when compared to patients who were given a different type of iron therapy injection called ferumoxytol. Among the patient group given Injectafer, 50.8% experienced severe hypophosphatemia while only 0.9 % of the ferumoxytol group experienced similar issues.
What Are the Side Effects of Hypophosphatemia?
Common symptoms and side effects of hypophosphatemia include:
- Mental confusion
- Loss of sensation or tingling
- Difficulty in breathing
- Respiratory failure
- Bone pain
- Bone fractures
- Cardiac arrest and heart failure
85% of the body’s phosphorus is found in bones. Although phosphate deficiency is generally rare, severe phosphate deficiency can ultimately lead to death, which is why it’s critical that you seek medical attention if you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above.
How to File an Injectafer Lawsuit
If you or a loved one were prescribed Injectafer and suffered harm from hypophosphatemia, then you might be eligible to file a lawsuit against the manufacturer of the drug for failing to investigate or provide adequate warnings about the risk of developing hypophosphatemia. Although the prescribing information for Injectafer lists hypophosphatemia under “Adverse Reactions,” it does not describe the severity of the condition or the extreme side effects found by scientists in the studies cited above.
Because Injectafer is used widely and affects multiple people, a mass tort has already been started by plaintiffs who have experienced a variety of injuries, including hypophosphatemia, severe hypophosphatemia, osteomalacia, bone fractures, and more.
